| Summary | The course provides an overview of the development of Gaelic poetry from a tradition-bound medium of expression to the proliferation of different modern genres that characterises the subject today. The poetry under discussion takes in the work of a range of poets whose contribution to the corpus is both distinctive in itself and illustrative of the themes and concerns that are present at various stages of the century. Both famous and lesser-known poets are represented in the selection from the available corpus, and the work of native speakers is considered along that of learners of Gaelic. The course is taught through the medium of Gaelic.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the breadth of Gaelic poetry throughout the twentieth century;
- explain the development of different strands of the modern Gaelic poetic tradition from orally composed song to verse with predominantly literate characteristics;
- assess critically the work of a number of key poets of the period;
- demonstrate an understanding of the salient aspects of literary criticism relating to Gaelic poetry of the period;
- demonstrate competence in transferable skills, e.g. close engagement with texts, critical evaluation of source material, independent reading, coherent and clearly structured writing, oral presentation, group discussion, time management.
