| Summary | This course aims to provide knowledge to achieve an appropriate specific or differential diagnosis and initiate appropriate management in community-associated infection scenarios, be able to apply the Principles of Public Health Management in matters related to prevention and control of communicable diseases, and demonstrate leadership ability in dealing with outbreak situations, demonstrate the ability to analyse and interpret surveillance data and translate the results into policy and practice. |

Formal summative written assessment will constitute 60% of the student's grade. Online assessment will incorporate a variety of activities will constitute 40% of their overall course grade and is taken to represent a formative assessment of learning throughout the programme.
Assessment will be based on various online activities including written submissions (web forms), discussion fora and reflective review. Extensive use of selective release (requiring the student to complete one task before being permitted to proceed to the next) technologies will be made to facilitate interactive and dynamic online assignments.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the principles of public health in relation to communicable diseases and infection.
- Describe basic epidemiological methods and their application in identification of disease threats, outbreak management, prevention and control of disease spread.
- Demonstrate understanding of the key components for a public health service and the ability to evaluate provisions and activities in the area of community acquired infections and public health protection.
- Understand the requirements for notification of communicable infections.
- Understand and describe key aspects of the management of community acquired infections, including vaccination programmes.
