SummaryEmbryology will cover the basic elements of human development, organogenesis and congenital abnormalities.
Course description The principal aim of this course will be to introduce all aspects of human development covering the events associated with ovulation of the egg, through fertilization, and pre- and post-implantation to embryonic and fetal development of all of the body systems.

Gametogenesis, development from fertilisation to blastocyst stage, implantation, placental development and embryogenesis will be covered in this course.

Additional Information (Assessment) Each course will be assessed by an item of in-course assessment, weighted at 30% of the course mark, and a class test/MCQ, weighted at 70% of the course mark. Details of in-course assessment will be provided within the course.
Feedback In addition to the formal summative assessment required to pass this course, formative self-assessment utilising MCQ/EMQ formats will also be provided.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Gain a basic knowledge of normal human development.
  2. Relate the embryology to the organisation of the body as observed in the Human Anatomy courses.
  3. Appreciate how normal development can go wrong and how this manifests itself in commonly observed congenital abnormalities.
