SummaryThis first-semester course introduces first-year postgraduates in LLC to Edinburgh's extensive range of electronic sources and material archives, training them to recognize the research methodologies that these resources serve so they can generate effective research strategies.
Course description In addition to the three lectures during Week 1, students will attend workshops and undertake bibliographical assignments that will provide students with the scope and opportunity to produce solid preliminary research on topics that they choose. Students will be given guidance on Chinese reference formatting and library resources.

Additional Information (Assessment) Students will attend lectures and a choice of workshops, completing one or two bibliographical assignments, depending on the requirements of their MSc programme. In many cases, this assignment will comprise an annotated bibliography that should include a number of forms of documents, such as unpublished theses, manuscripts, online references or specific editions, and should be no more than 2,000 words in length.
Feedback Students will get written feedback on their bibliography assignments in individual sessions with their course organiser or personal tutor.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. use, acquire, organise and synthesise a number of research technologies, including online resources, databases, archives, manuscripts, hypertext and unpublished documents.
  2. identify specific technical problems in their area of study, including problems of historical method, archival access, translation and presentation.
  3. produce a full scholarly bibliography in their area of study; they will also be competent in techniques in the management and presentation of research, including thesis preparation.
