SummaryThe course will provide students with a foundation in Chinese history, culture and society. Topics will include the historical foundations of Chinese philosophies, religions and ideologies, the origins of China's contemporary political and social structure, and aspects of Chinese literary culture.
Course description Topics covered can include:
- Origins of Chinese civilization
- Government and society in Imperial China
- Religion in Chinese society
- The Great Divergence
- The High Qing and the Qing Decline
- Early 20th C. transformations
- Gender and Family in China
- China's Revolutions
- China Facing the West

What to expect from the course:
Introduction to and discussion of different topics which provide students with a foundation for discussing different aspects of China's history. Classes are focused on themes which have been subject to extensive debate. Classes follow a mixed format of short talks, discussions and group work.

To prepare the requested reading and contribute to discussions in class.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand and explain developments in a number of key areas of China's history, society and culture.
  2. Understand different empirical and theoretical contributions to the debate in topics covered.
  3. Criticize and justify different empirical and theoretical contributions on China's history, society and culture.
  4. Analyze and evaluate primary materials related to China's history, society and culture.
  5. Develop oral and written presentation skills.
