| Summary | This course provides non-native Japanese students with the essential translation skills and relevant theoretical implications. The work will consist of topic-based translation, reading of parallel texts, synopsis writing in the target language, and evaluation of translation text for both human and non-human translators. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a small group translation project in the latter part of the second semester.
All students will be given a formative feedback exercise that will be helpful for the assessment for this course and students' general academic development. |
| Course description |
This course provides non-native Japanese students with the essential translation skills, also covering relevant theoretical implications. The work is on a wide range of exercises and activities, which include speed translation, reading of parallel texts, synopsis writing in the target language, and evaluation of text translated by both human and non-human translators.
The second semester is divided into two teaching blocks: students will have the opportunity to participate in five specialized translation seminars in conjunction with Japanese Language 4A (Translation from English to Japanese) for the first block, and then take part in a supervised small group translation project during the second block. Through this group work, students will gain hands-on experience of translation processes such as planning, peer-to-peer (P2P) modes of learning and assessment, editing, and presenting the finished product.
