SummaryThis course is intended for beginners with no previous knowledge of Korean. It is designed to give absolute beginners a basic, working knowledge of spoken and written Korean. The course is not suitable for students with previous knowledge of Korean. All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination. This course is a semester long and runs in semester 1 and semester 2. On successful completion of the course students will have the option of taking Foundation Korean Language 2, which follows on from Foundation Korean Language 1.
Course description The lectures will be taught in larger groups (of approximately 30 students), while separate oral tutorials will entail smaller groups (of around 15 students). In the tutorials, students will be able to practice speaking and writing tutorials. Classes will be conducted in an interactive manner, combining PowerPoint presentations by the instructor and role play among students. Students will learn the Korean script (Hangul) and will acquire a vocabulary of 600/700 Korean words. You will also learn how to comprehend and compose short pages in Korean. Topics covered throughout the course will include daily routines, making plans, means of transportation and shopping.

Additional Information (Assessment) 1) Continuous Assessment: 2 x Class Tests and regular attendance: 50%.
2) Degree exam (50%): two-hour written paper (content: vocabulary and grammar, reading comprehension and composition).
Students must pass both the continuous assessment and the degree exam component to pass the course.
Feedback Students will be given written feedback on their continuous assessment tasks, including corrections of their mistakes and indications of general areas for improvement. Students will also receive oral feedback in class time, including corrections of their pronunciation and grammar / vocabulary mistakes.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Read and comprehend short, simple texts written in the Korean script (Hangul)
  2. Comprehend basic audio passages of Korean language being spoken at a natural pace
  3. Communicate at an elementary level of Korean in situations of daily routine, such as introducing oneself and making telephone calls
  4. Observe basic Korean cultural customs, such as how to greet someone, what do before eating meals, etc.

LLC students may only take this course if it is over and above their full credit load, as a non credit bearing course. Visiting Students may only take this course for credits.

Please note that auditing this course is not allowed. You must be enrolled as CE (Class and Assessment including centrally arranged exam).
