SummaryA course for beginners with no previous knowledge of Japanese, designed to introduce the Japanese language and culture. The course is not suitable for students with previous knowledge of Japanese language.

All students take all elements of assessment including the examination.

This course runs both in semester 1 and semester 2.

On successful completion of the course students will have the option of taking Foundation Japanese Language 2 in Semester 1 (20 credits) or in Semester 2 (20 credits), which follow on from Foundation Japanese Language 1.
Course description The following list is a description of the contents of the course. Along with each topic and function, relevant vocabulary, grammatical and textual structures, and culture notes will be introduced.

-Japanese scripts: hiragana and katakana
-Introducing yourself and others
-Nationalities and occupations
-Talking about a nearby object and its owner
-Dates, times and numbers
-Prices, characteristics of items and shopping
-Talking about where you will go, when, how, and with whom
-Talking about numbers of things or people that exist in a particular place

Feedback on formative assessed work will be provided within 15 working days.

Students will also have a chance to discuss their feedback with your instructor during class time and via emails if they wish.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Speaking and listening: Exchange greetings, give his or her identity, name a number of familiar objects, shop and ask about an item, and talk about a trip very briefly if given adequate time and familiar cues.
  2. Reading and writing: Read and write a very short text in Japanese if it is written without any kanji (Chinese characters). Read and write a simple letter or postcard on a limited range of topics, such as event times and trips.
  3. Understanding cultural diversity: Recognise some aspects of Japanese culture, such as landmarks in major cities, Japanese food, and Japanese manners in business situations.
  4. Computer and IT skills: Use emails, Blackboard Learn virtual learning environment and other tools in order to communicate with classmates and teaching staff. Students will become familiar with the use of online language learning resources to enhance their self-study and continue with Japanese language learning.
  5. Personal development: Develop confidence in language learning, understanding and responding to others in appropriate situations. Students will learn to work individually as well as in pairs and small groups.
