SummaryThis course is only available to ECA students on degree programmes belonging to the School of Art.

This first stage of your studies in contemporary art introduces you to key concepts and approaches used in the study of visual culture. During your first year you will explore and apply a variety of critical approaches to analyse visual culture. Through a range of assignments you will test, apply and communicate your ideas in a clear, cogent manner.

Aims
1 Introduce and establish key concepts and theories of visual culture
2 Develop an awareness of and the ability to select and use a range of appropriate research methods
3 Foster critical enquiry that leads to the visual, verbal and written communication of ideas in an analytical manner

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. (You will be assessed against three Learning Outcomes and all are equally weighted)
    Investigation: Use appropriate theories, histories and practices to help you select texts, images and artefacts.
  2. Reflection: Demonstrate an ability to analyse and apply knowledge to various forms of visual and material culture.
  3. Communication: Convey your ideas and arguments in coherent and appropriate formats.
