| Course description |
This course offers an introduction to architecture and landscape architecture history in Europe and to key elements of such history in other parts of the world, normally including North America and Asia. It is delivered through a combination of classes, tutorials, assessments and a study tour of English landscape designs.
The Introduction to Architectural History gives an overview of ancient origins and early European architecture, the architecture of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance (from Italy to Northern Europe), and Eighteenth Century European architecture.
The Introduction to History of Landscape Architecture covers European landscape history, from early beginnings in Persia and Egypt to mediaeval gardens in Europe; expressions of the Renaissance in garden designs of Italy, France and Britain; the eighteenth century English Landscape Garden tradition, including the work of Kent, Brown and Repton; the Picturesque; the early parks movement in Britain; Loudon and the Gardenesque; and gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement. It also takes an international perspective to cover key design traditions in one or more of the following: northern India, China, Japan and North America.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad understanding of selected historical styles, traditions and movements in architecture and landscape architecture, and of the design elements and vocabulary typical of them.
- undertake visual analysis in the field in a structured manner and represent this through the medium of sketching, notes and brief commentary, including comparative analysis of historic examples of architecture and landscape architecture.
- demonstrate development of written communication skills via a critical and reflective approach to understanding particular historic landscapes and associated buildings, and the key theories and principles they exemplify
