Summary | This course will provide the student with a module which will facilitate the application of previously acquired knowledge, skills and attributes to common surgical issues within the nine surgical specialties defined by the Joint Committee on Higher Surgical Training (neurosurgery, urology, general, trauma and orthopaedic, cardiothoracic, otolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, paediatric, and plastic surgery). The module will be tailored to the candidate's specialty preference by use appropriate case scenarios. The course will be based on a recognised syllabus submitted to the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board by the nine surgical specialties. |

Additional Information (Assessment) |
All six core courses in Year 2 are assessed during each module by participation in online discussion, multiple choice questioning and extended item matching questions. An end of year MCQ based examination will be employed to ensure integration of the principles of perioperative care into surgical practice in general. Key principles that will underpin assessment activities are evidence-based practice and the application of theory to clinical practice. The principle of constructive alignment will underpin all assessments. This will ensure the assessment tasks are aligned with the specific course objectives, the content of the course and the teaching methods employed. |

Learning Outcomes
The programme aims to ensure that candidates are able to apply the knowledge of the basic sciences and perioperative management to the selected surgical specialty in the elective, urgent and emergency clinical setting in the early years of their clinical experience.

Special Arrangements |
All courses will be delivered taught by distance learning, using a purpose-built delivery platform which acts as a course intranet. Registered students are provided with a user name and password that allows them to access this course intranet. The intranet provides a variety of educational material and supports a range of approaches by the students to the material provided. Online delivery will be supported through the provision of interactive multimedia tutorials and discussions with peers and tutors based around case scenarios and virtual patients. The intranet will also house a number of interactive tutorials that allow students to work with information in a self-paced manner to test their understanding of important concepts and principles. Study guides with lecture notes are available. A CD ROM of the course readings is mailed to each student at the beginning of the year. |
Additional Class Delivery Information |
Students will be expected to participate actively in online discussion activity and to complete at least 10 hours of self-directed study per week. The total workload for the course will be approximately 100 hours. |
