Summary | Education in the UK has gone through several enormous transformations in the last half century, in common with public services more generally, and in common with educational changes throughout Europe. One of the most notable sources of change in the UK has been the devolution of most political responsibility for education to the Scottish Parliament, National Assembly for Wales, and Northern Ireland Assembly, while responsibility for education in England remains with the UK Parliament at Westminster. This course aims to understand these changes in education policy, relating it both to European developments and to reform resulting from devolution. The course aims to provide an understanding of these policy and political processes in the context of perennial concerns about the relationship between pedagogical and political authority, the role of the state and of civil society in underpinning free enquiry and debate, the problematic questions of accountability and professional autonomy, and the implications of social diversity and social inequality for education¿s role in enabling a common citizenship. |
