| Summary | This course encourages students to take enjoyment in sociological ideas and apply them in everyday life. The course aims to induct first year students into the Sociology subject area and help students to develop the sociological study skills required at university level.
Students MUST be in year 1 of a Sociology degree programme (single or combined honours) or Sustainable Development with Sociology as their main subject. Students taking degree programmes in other subjects may not take this course |

Semester 1: Student blogs recording their reflections on what they learned from each session. These will be reviewed, assessed and discussed with students at the end of the semester.
Semester 2: A sociological diary, kept online. Students will be required to present and discuss entries from their diaries in a number of sessions throughout the semester, and then their final diaries will also be reviewed, assessed and discussed with students at the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Gain competence and confidence in the key study skills of literature searching, critical sociological thinking and evaluating online sources
- Learn how to present sociological ideas effectively in writing and orally
- Learn how to improve sociological understanding and the standard of assessed work through learning from feedback and from peers
- Learn how to interpret basic numerical sociological information presented in tables and graphically
- Be able to apply sociological ideas in thinking about the media, popular culture, and other dimensions of everyday life
