| Summary | An interdisciplinary introduction to the latest ideas and theoretical issues concerning politics, religion, culture, history, economy, and community that are relevant to students studying all aspects of modern South Asia. Relevant practical research methodology questions will also be addressed. |
| Course description |
The course intends to provide an interdisciplinary introduction to social and cultural theories relevant to studying South Asia for students commencing postgraduate study at MSc level. It will offer a selection of concepts and theories that have profoundly affected all areas of contemporary research on South Asia and that are an essential reference points for students working on the contemporary subcontinent. As well as the latest ideas due reference will be made to 'classic' texts that continue to influence scholars engaged in the area study of South Asia from all disciplinary perspectives.
The course is not intended as an introduction to South Asian Culture and Society in itself, but is intended as a companion to other PG courses that do so and as an introduction to theoretical issues that are relevant to all forms of advanced study concerning South Asia. Amongst others it serves as a companion course to ¿South Asia: Culture, Politics and Economy¿ (Sociology); ¿South Asia: Poverty and Development¿ (Sociology); ¿Gender and Development¿ (Sociology), and ¿Postcolonial South Asia: the Politics of Historiography¿ (History).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate in writing, class discussions, and presentations a detailed and critical command of the diverse methodologies appropriate to the interdisciplinary study of contemporary South Asia
- Demonstrate an ability to analyse and reflect critically upon relevant scholarship on the interdisciplinary study of contemporary South Asia
- Demonstrate the ability to develop and sustain original scholarly arguments in oral and written form by independently formulating appropriate questions and utilising relevant evidence considered in the course
- Demonstrate in seminar discussions, presentations, and the class essay originality and independence of mind and initiative; intellectual integrity and maturity; an ability to evaluate the work of others, including peers; and a considerable degree of autonomy
