| Summary | An introduction to the basic precepts underpinning professionalism and the ethical and legal frameworks within which nursing operates. The primacy of such professional values and communication and interpersonal skills is explored in depth. The workings of the current NHS are identified and the notions of leadership, management and inter-professional teamwork are introduced with a focus on communication.
The focus of this first year course is upon the understanding and acquisition of the skills and attributes of a professional nurse who works with integrity within the professional ethical code and the prevailing legal framework to deliver safe, effective, compassionate, person-centred care. Students are introduced to issues such as confidentiality, data protection, dignity and respect. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Have gained an understanding of what professionalism is and how it can be developed though an understanding of the concept of professionalism and what it means to hold professional values as a professional nurse
- Have gained an appreciation of what professionalism involves in the context of multi-disciplinary team working and leadership
- Have an increased awareness of how personal and professional values shape our behaviour
- Have acquired the foundation knowledge of communication and interpersonal skills
- Have gained an understanding of the recognised professional, ethical and legal frameworks which shape their practice with particular regard for the NMC and The Code: standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives (NMC, 2015)
