SummaryThe main aim of this course is to expand the students' musical awareness by developing a perceptive and analytical approach to listening.
Course description The complete musician is one who can easily recognize, analyze, and articulate harmonic and structural elements of music. This course therefore develops the aural and analytical skills required using ear training and dictation exercises, recordings, and online resources.

Pre-requisitesVisiting students should have at least one semester of aural skills training. We will only consider University/College level courses.

Additional Information (Assessment) One class examination at the end of Semester 1 (50%) and one degree examination in the May Exam Diet (50%). NB - The degree examination is held in May to allow the time and practice needed to master of the practical skills required to achieve the learning outcomes of the course.

Visiting Student Variant Assessment: One class examination (100%).

Relationship between Assessment and Learning Outcomes:
Each learning outcome is assessed through the class and degree examinations.
Feedback Oral feedback will be given in lectures and tutorials that assess and improve the accuracy of ear training and dictation exercises. Written feedback on class examination within 15 working days.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. demonstrate listening skills through the aural analysis of a wide range of musical pieces.
  2. demonstrate a broad knowledge of various elements of musical expression, such as pitch, rhythm, timbre, texture and structure.
  3. demonstrate the ability of aurally recognise various more complex harmonic progressions.
  4. demonstrate the ability to accurately transcribe more complex melodic and four-part harmonic dictations.
Reading List
There is no compulsory text book for this course. However, published text books and audio resources do exist for ear training, and students are encouraged to discover and to use these for themselves, alongside the course!
