Course description |
The overall aim of this module is to provide an introduction to generative syntax. The main objectives are to provide students with:
o an overview of the kind of things which need to be explained by a syntactic theory
o an overview of analyses which have been developed to explain them
o the ability to analyse data in terms of core syntactic concepts such as constituency, selection, movement
In order to understand the core concepts in syntax and how they relate to actual data it is necessary to practice analysis and argumentation from the start. With this in mind, the course is set up so that much of initial presentation of material is delivered through online video material and readings, with class time devoted to working through and discussing problems and applying ideas.
