| Summary | An intensive course of tuition in spoken and written Spanish for students with no or little previous knowledge of the language. A general introduction to the history and culture of the Hispanic world, together with the study of two appropriate texts and/or films. The course is open to students of any year, but not to students qualified for admission to Spanish 1B. A good deal of private study is necessary to meet the requirements of the course. |

Other requirements | A pass in at least one modern or classical language at Higher Grade (SCE) or at Advanced level (GCE) or evidence of linguistic proficiency.
OR 50% in Foundation Spanish 3 at the first attempt;
OR equivalent.
If your entry qualification for Spanish is a Scottish Higher, you will automatically be admitted to 1B. Students with a 'crash' Higher OR a Higher awarded more than 1 year ago will be registered on Spanish 1B, but may take a Diagnostic Test to gauge their ability. Depending on the results, course registration would be changed to Spanish 1A.
Other students whose qualifications in Spanish are more than 3 years old may also take the Diagnostic Test to determine whether Spanish 1A or 1B would be more appropriate.
Further details on the Online Diagnostic Test will be provided by the Course Organiser in the First Class Meeting.
Please note that changing from 1B to 1A is not allowed in any other circumstances, and is not possible after week 2 of semester 1.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Understand the main points of the Spanish language grammar with clear standard input on vocabulary and familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
- Understand and express themselves in the target language and deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling in an area where the language is spoken.
- Produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
- Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plan.
- Develop basic analytical skills through the composition of a précis.
