Summary	A course for beginners with no previous knowledge of German, designed to give absolute beginners a basic, working knowledge of spoken and written German. The course is not suitable for students with previous knowledge of German. All students take all elements of assessment, including the examination. This course is a semester long and runs both in semester 1 and semester 2. On successful completion of the course students will have the option of taking Foundation German Language 2 (ELCG07008, 20 credits), which follows on from Foundation German Language 1.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to: Knowledge and understanding: Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of concrete needs; can understand simple personal questions when people speak slowly and clearly. Practice: Applied knowledge and understanding: achieve German language competence comparable to the CEFR Level A1/1+; Can introduce him/ herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/ she lives, people he/ she knows and things he/ she has. Reading comprehension of short simple texts regarding personal information; Can write about him/ herself, using short, simple phrases. Generic cognitive skills: Produce and read texts on basic everyday themes; engage in listening, spoken and written language activities at A1/1+ level. Communication and ICT: Develop critical skills to ensure the use of reliable language resources both printed and/or digital (e.g. bilingual dictionaries, grammar books, translation tools). Autonomy, accountability and working with others: Take responsibility for independent vocabulary acquisition and grammatical study; for monitoring one�s engagement in German language activities outside of the classroom (eg. online resources, extra learning materials available from LEARN, main library, DVD library).

Special Arrangements	This course is open to all students as a credit bearing course, or over and above their full credit load, as a non credit bearing course. Auditing this course is not allowed. You must be enrolled as CE (Class and Assessment including centrally arranged exam). DELC students may only take this course if it over and above their full credit load, as a non credit bearing course. Visiting students may only take the course for credits.
