| Summary | It will study the Scottish Church during one of the most important periods in its history, when it was by far the wealthiest and most powerful institution in the kingdom and exerted a dominant influence upon the lives of the Scottish people and it will examine the beliefs and practices of late medieval Christianity within the Scottish context. |

Academic Description:
This course will examine religion in late medieval Scotland, c1400-c1560 and its relationship to all levels of Scottish society and make comparisons with other parts of Western Europe. It will employ a broadly thematic approach and draw upon many types of historical evidence with a particular emphasis upon visual and material culture for this largely non-literate society.
Syllabus/Outline Content:
The course will apply varied historical approaches to the understanding of the religious life and experience in Scotland c1400-c1560. It will emphasise the advanced assessment of varieties of historical evidence, especially the visual and material culture. It will examine the institutional framework of the late medieval Church in Scotland, monastic life, patterns of worship and devotion, the laity and clergy, church buildings and furnishings, attitudes towards death, pilgrimage and the cult of the saints, church courts, universities and religious dissent.
Student Learning Experience Information:
The course has a weekly lecture and seminar, each lasting an hour, which provides opportunities for interaction and discussion. Every weekly seminar will investigate a range of historical evidence in detail as well as secondary readings. Each student will post weekly comments online and present to the class on at least one weekly topic and evidence. Students will demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes in their assessed essay, presentations and through their participation in discussions online and in class.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss in detail the place of the Church within the kingdom of Scotland during the late medieval period.
- Assess Scottish religious beliefs and practices during the late medieval period.
- Interpret at an advanced level different types of historical evidence from the period.
- Critique the secondary literature on the Scottish Church and late medieval society.
- Demonstrate an advanced ability to identify key terms and their meanings and good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
