Academic Description:
This course will examine religion in late medieval Scotland, c1400-c1560 and its relationship to all levels of Scottish society. It will employ a broadly thematic approach and draw upon many types of historical evidence with a particular emphasis upon visual and material culture for this largely non-literate society.
Syllabus/Outline Content:
The course will apply varied historical approaches to the understanding of the religious life and experience in Scotland c1400-c1560. It will emphasise the assessment of varieties of historical evidence, especially the visual and material culture. It will examine the institutional framework of the late medieval Church in Scotland, monastic life, patterns of worship and devotion, the laity and clergy, church buildings and furnishings, attitudes towards death, pilgrimage and the cult of the saints, church courts, universities and religious dissent.
Student Learning Experience Information:
The course has a weekly lecture and seminar, each lasting an hour, which provides opportunities for interaction and discussion. Every weekly seminar has a schedule of secondary reading and historical evidence associated with it. Every week each student will choose one item of historical evidence and post an online comment upon that item and discuss it during the seminar. Each student will be required to write one online report on a secondary reading and present that to the relevant seminar. Students will demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes in their assessed written work, examination and through their participation in class discussions.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Recognise and discuss the place of the Church within the kingdom of Scotland c1400-c1560.
- Identify and assess Scottish religious beliefs and practices during the late medieval period.
- Interpret different types of historical evidence during the late medieval period.
- Critique the secondary literature on the Scottish Church and late medieval society.
- Demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings and good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
