| Course description |
Academic Description:
This course will examine the extended process of reformation at the local, regional and national levels within Scotland from the Reformation Crisis of 1559-60 to the start of the Covenanting Revolution in 1638. It will employ a combination of chronological and thematic approaches and draw upon many types of historical evidence to investigate the establishment of the Reformed Kirk and the changing beliefs and practices among the Scots.
Syllabus/Outline Content:
The course will apply varied historical approaches to the understanding of the żlongż Scottish Reformation. It will emphasise the assessment of varieties of historical evidence, including the visual and material culture. It will examine the establishment of the Scottish Reformed Kirk from 1560-1638 at local regional and national levels and investigate themes such as worship, discipline, language and literacy, confessional identity and the Highlands and Islands.
Student Learning Experience Information:
The course has a weekly lecture and seminar, each lasting an hour, which provides opportunities for interaction and discussion. Every weekly seminar has a schedule of secondary reading and historical evidence associated with it. Every week each student will choose one item of historical evidence and post an online comment upon that item and discuss it during the seminar. Each student will be required to write one online report on a secondary reading and present that to the relevant seminar. Students will demonstrate their achievement of the intended learning outcomes in their assessed written work, examination and through their participation in class discussions.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Recognise and discuss the żlongż Reformation in Scotland.
- Identify and assess changing Scottish religious beliefs and practices c1560-c1638.
- Interpret different types of historical evidence from the period.
- Critique the secondary literature on the Scottish Protestant Reformation.
- Demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings and good judgement about how to judge the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
