SummaryThis course is being offered to give students a basic introduction/revision to bookkeeping and financial accounting.

It is an optional course for students who may start one of our finance Masters having studied no accounting before or a long time previously.

This is an additional course which will feed into the Analysis of Corporate Financial Information core course offered in the first semester.
Course description Session 1 The accounting equation; Recording business transactions into the accounting equation; Debits and Credits; The Trial Balance (TB); Introducing financial statements

Session 2 Recording transactions as journal entries/ ledger entries for: a service, trading or manufacturing business. Preparing an Income Statement (IS). Preparing a Statement of Financial Position (SFP)/Balance Sheet (BS)

Session 3 Introduction to a Statement of Cashflows; Review and Practice Exercise. Teaching will be delivered via two hour lectures introducing basic accounting concepts to students with worked examples. Students will be expected to complete practical exercises in preparation for the following lectures. Supplementary instruction will be provided via BPP e-learning modules on Understanding Bookkeeping and Understanding Accounts.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the double entry system
  2. Make basic journal entry adjustments to a working trial balance
  3. Produce a simple Income Statement, Statement of Financial Position and Cashflow
