SummaryProject Management is the application of management principles to deliver a project in accordance with predetermined objectives for time, cost and quality. This course will consider these principles in the management of all types project with particular emphasis on engineering projects, with respect to the project's life-cycle, the parties involved, planning, estimating, risk management, contract management, and project control. The course will examine the context of these themes through the development of a project execution plan based on a real project.

Course description This course takes a managerial approach to project management. Many of the tools and techniques used to run projects in the modern context have been around for some time and there is a large body of professional knowledge that captures project management practice; for example through the AMP, PMI and PRINCE2 methodology. However there are many instances of project failure, many of which are reported in the national press.

This course aims to make students aware of the commonly available tools used to run projects are, so the course introduces project lifecycle, stakeholder management, planning and control, estimating, risk management and closing projects down as subjects. However the course takes a reflective look at these approaches and asks students to consider whether what makes some projects successful and others not. If these tools have been around for such a long time, why are projects so risky and prone to cost overruns, expanded timescales and a failure to deliver against the stated objectives? If we can understand this we can learn from project failure and build better and more robust practice.

Feedback Feedback will be provided throughout the course as part of a highly-interactive teaching and learning approach and also through the assessed participation element. Feedback will also be provided during the course to guide students in the preparation of their individually-assessed project plan. Summative marks will be returned on a published timetable, which has been made clear to students at the start of the academic year.

Students will be provided with electronic written feedback for all coursework. Coursework cannot be taken away by students. Students who wish to view a marked piece of coursework, should contact the programme support team.
