Summary | Building on your studies of particular functional areas of the firm, strategic management deals with the entire business and considers how its management might steer its future direction. The course is taught and assessed through case studies to develop your skills for conducting a strategic analysis of a firm's strategy, to formulate recommendations based on this analysis, and to communicate these recommendations persuasively. These skills will be useful in your job application process and in your future careers.

Course description |
Coursework is to prepare and present a strategic analysis and recommendations for the fabric and homecare division Proctor and Gamble corporation, whose managers will be helping your work, and you will be hear from and be able to question a president of one of its top businesses. In this task, you will be supported and advised by practicing management consultants from one of the world's leading management consulting companies, and from banking professionals from one of the world's foremost banks, who will help develop your analytical, report writing and presentation skills.

Student Learning Experience
The course uses a combination of lectures, case study tutorials, seminars for essential skills, and team presentations. There is one two-hour lecture and a one hour small group tutorial or seminar most weeks. The final week will involve your final presentations, capped off with a lunch and a prize-giving for the best reports and presentations generously sponsored by Ernst and Young and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Additional Information (Assessment) |
For continuous assessment, you will work in a team to advise the Proctor and Gamble corporation on its future direction, based on your analysis of its strategic situation and your identification of strategic options it might pursue. You will present this analysis and recommendations as a management report and an oral presentation, and feedback will be given from an academic and a practising management consultant. The contribution of each assessment method towards the final mark is as follows:
1. Group written management report (approximately 4,000 words): 30%
2. Group presentation of this report to management consultants: 10%
3. Individual case-study based examination: 60%

Generic feedback on your coursework, together with individual marks, will be available on Learn. You can also look at your individual feedback in the UG Office (Room 1.11, Business School, 29 Buccleuch Place) and take away a copy of the feedback form, but you will not be able to take away the original piece of coursework, as it may be required by the Board of Examiners.
Your examination marks will be posted on Learn (together with generic feedback and examination statistics) as soon as possible after the Boards of Examiners meeting (usually end of January/beginning of February. At this time you may come into the UG Office (Room 1.11, Business School, 29 Buccleuch Place) to look at your examination scripts. Note that you will not be able to remove any examination scripts from the UG Office as they may be required by the Board of Examiners.
