SummaryFor the first five weeks, the students work on a self-study MATLAB module which will consist of five individual units. The individual units will be concluded by competence based self tests so that the students can test whether they understood the concepts and are able to apply them. These units will be supported by weekly computing drop-in sessions. The learning outcomes of the module will be assessed by a computer-based class test.

The second half of the course focuses on the application of numerical methods in a chemical engineering context. The learning outcomes of this part of the course will be assessed by completion of a hand-in exercise.
Course description The course has two parts.

PART 1 consists of introductory material (week 1 - 5) assessed by a 1 hour computer-based open book class test.

PART 2 consists of more advanced material (week 6 - 10) assessed by a hand-in assignment.
All materials are self-study and online. All learning is supported by weekly drop-in computer lab sessions. For PART 2 additional support is provided in the form of weekly tutorials. An introductory lecture is provided in week 1.


The following subjects will be covered during the course:

Week 1: Introductory Lecture

Week 1 - 5: PART 1, Self-study introductory MATLAB modules, units 1 - 5.

Weeks 6 - 9: PART 2, Application of numerical methods to chemical engineering problems using MATLAB:

Week 6: Class Test

Week 6: How to tackle more complex programming tasks, bug fixing.

Week 7: Solving ODEs numerically

Week 8: Root finding

Week 9: Regression analysis & parameter estimation

Week 10: Revision and hand-in exercise

Week 11: Electronic submission of hand-in exercise
