Course description |
Academic Description:
The prophets of Israel as we encounter them in the books of the Hebrew Bible are the most distinctive representatives of Hebrew Religion. In looking back at the past, analysing the present and predicting the future, they bear witness to the history of the God of Israel and his people. The prophets as mediators between God and the people played an important role all over the Ancient Near East, however, only the Hebrew prophets come into books that reflect on the relationship between God and his people. Hebrew prophecy thus represents a unique phenomenon in the Ancient Near Eastern context.
The course aims at investigating this phenomenon by focusing on the literary tradition of Hebrew prophecy.
Syllabus/Outline Content:
While the first two weeks give an introduction into the phenomenon of Hebrew prophecy as such, the further sessions focus on the three major prophetic books (Jeremiah, Isaiah, and Ezekiel) and a selection of prophets from the Book of the Twelve. The seminar outline is based on the history of Israel and shows how each of the biblical prophets fit into this. A summary session in revision week brings all the prophets together.
Student Learning Experience Information:
The weekly schedule follows a certain rhythm. While each lecture introduces the prophet of the week, the corresponding seminar will look in detail at key texts from the respective book that will be prepared for discussion by the class. In addition, special reading will be given each week. Each level 10 student is supposed to summarise one of the prophets discussed for the last session in revision week. Through participation in lecture and seminar discussions, as well as through the written work and seminar presentation included in the assessment schedule, students will demonstrate their achievement of the included learning outcomes.
