Course description |
Academic Description:
This course is intended to extend and deepen existing knowledge of classical Hebrew by the reading and study of biblical and non-biblical texts.
Syllabus/Outline Content:
Students' knowledge of classical Hebrew texts will be extended and deepened by the reading of the Prophecy of Habakkuk found in the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament and its ancient Jewish commentary from the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Habakkuk Pesher. It will allow students to extend their knowledge of Hebrew poetry and introduce them to the reading of unpointed Hebrew.
Student Learning Experience Information:
Students will read the Prophecy and its ancient sectarian commentary together to learn about one of the earliest receptions of the biblical texts. The topic is ancient Jewish biblical interpretation.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a wider experience of classical Hebrew through careful reading of selected Biblical and non-biblical texts.
- Have the ability to read unpointed Hebrew texts from the scrolls themselves.
- Have developed the skills of textual criticism through first-hand examination of the range of relevant evidence.
- Have developed skills in exegesis through a structured investigation of the literary, historical and theological dimensions of the texts studied.
- Demonstrate an ability to identify key terms and their meanings and good judgement about how to assess the relative importance of items on course bibliographies.
