Summary | This course is a continuation of Japanese 2A / Japanese Language 2. It enables students to develop further in speaking, listening, reading and writing to Japanese Language Proficiency Test N3 or Common European Framework of Reference for Languages B1/2.
This course is not available to native or near-native speakers of Japanese, or complete beginners. If in doubt, contact the Course Organiser.
All students will be given a formative feedback exercise that will be helpful for the assessment for this course and students' general academic development.
A placement test and questionnaire on students¿ background in Japanese language studies will be conducted in the first class. |
Course description |
Course Outline:
Intermediate Japanese Language will continue to cover all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing), and will help students expand their socio-cultural knowledge for various types of communication. The students will master those language skills at the mid-intermediate level through a variety of class activities, including reading longer texts and/or authentic texts relating to Japanese culture and society including authentic texts and class activities. The course will also help students solidify the grammar, vocabulary and kanji knowledge they learned at the beginner level.
The class will focus on more academic types of activities (e.g. reading followed by discussions, group presentations, writing short essays etc, all in Japanese) than Japanese Language 2, along with daily casual conversations related to relevant topics of Japanese culture and society.
Learning Experience:
Intermediate Japanese Language is taught in one class to cover all aspects of language learning, with the main textbook and the workbooks. These class is expected to be supplemented by individual study.
There will be class tests and quizzes throughout the year, as well as oral presentations and composition assignments. Formative feedback to support your learning will be given orally in class or in written form within 15 working days. You are also expected to do a set of group work with peer feedback element.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.
- interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
- produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
