Summary | This course is suitable for students who have successfully completed Introductory Chinese Language course 2 (ASST07005 or ASST07006) and for learners who have equivalent knowledge of the Chinese language: being familiar with the basic principles of the speaking and writing systems of the Chinese language; having a fair command of about 600 Chinese characters and some basic grammar and sentence structures that are used to express events in the past, present and future. This course is not available to native or near-native speakers of Chinese. If in doubt, contact the Course Organiser.
On successfully completing the course, students are expected to reach a lower intermediate level and have a good command of about 1000 Chinese characters in total. Students should be able to express more events in the past, present and future. Students should also have a fairly good understanding of China and its customs and ways of life. |
Course description |
This course covers various topics such as: daily routines; weather, seasons and clothes to wear; home visits; Chinese New Year; transport, distance and directions; hotel, accommodation, check-in and room facilities; museums, history and cultural relics; eating out, food and drink, Chinese dishes.
- To direct students towards a practical and efficient approach to Chinese language learning
- To raise students' cultural awareness in language learning
- To equip students with skills for future self-directed language learning
- To guide students in developing all four language skills and reach a lower-intermediate level in a balanced manner

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Have a fairly good understanding of China and its customs and ways of life.
- Have a good command of about 1000 Chinese characters.
- Be familiar with more grammatical and sentences structures related to the present and further on the basis of the ones introduced in Introductory Chinese Language and Introductory Chinese Language 2.
- Be familiar with some basic grammatical and sentence structures to express events in the past, especially 'le' and '... shi... de'.
- Be able to express information related to various topics such as: daily routines; weather, seasons and clothes to wear; home visits; Chinese New Year; transport, distance and directions; hotel, accommodation, check-in and room facilities; museums, history and cultural relics; eating out, food and drink, Chinese dishes.
