| Summary | The Amsterdam Academy of Architecture prepares students to practice spatial design as a discipline at the interface between fine art, building technology, civil engineering and landscape architecture on a Master Level. The combination of study and practical experience has been a traditional feature of the Academy of Architecture since its foundation in 1908. Study and work complement one another to form a full-time training course. |
| Course description |
The placement comprises the following compulsory elements:
Master-studio (4 SCQF)
Craftmanship (4 SCQF)
Paper (4 SCQF)
Winter workshop (4 SCQF)
Workshop (2 SCQF)
Clinic (2 SCQF)
Working practice at an office (30 SCQF)
Through invited speakers, Craftmanship emphasises how professional knowledge, research and inspiration are translated into design.
The clinic offers thematic clinics, and students sign up to one of the following themes:
- How to arrive at an idea.
- From idea to concept formation.
- Designing back and forth.
- From analysis to design.
- Taking the design further.
- Elaboration at scale level.
- Practice and study.
- Making a practical portfolio.
The workshops will involve students grasping and solving a topical spatial issue in a limited amount of time and in an interdisciplinary context; positioning vis-à-vis a topical social theme; the formulation, elaboration and presentation of a spatial vision as a team.
Finally, the practice placement enables the student to come into contact with every stage of the planning or building process from design to completion in the course of the study period and to gain insight into the links between those different parts of the trajectory.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- The internal and external curricula are two relatively independent but complementary parts of the placements at AHK.
