| Summary | ENSP specialises in project-orientated design teaching in studios. Emphasis is placed on the physical, geographical and human uses of the landscape.
Attention is focused on the opportunities inherent in to the site, its surface topography and hydrology, as well as invisible relationships such as the dialogue with history. We strive to develop our thinking by understanding a 'sense of place' and this approach is fundamental to our ethos as we conceptualise and select projects. |

The workshop is an introduction to the theme of the semester, i.e. the changing nature of the French countryside. The post-workshop course compares cultural differences in agricultural policies and landscapes, and covers French landscape policies. 'What Countyside?' encompasses a studio based project which will enable students to find new design models. 'Constructions and Infrastructure' will teach students how to express project requirements to technicians. The art studio develops drawing, conceptualisation and interpretative skills.
During this placement, students will investigate the role of the landscape architect when faced with an extensive terrority. The studio project will initiate reflections on large-scale sites (commune or group of communes), presenting similar issues to those addressed in social and ecological sciences for projects on diagnostic and territorial challenges. A debate on ideas with designers, ecologists, sociologists and geographers will precede the site work. The selected site will question the image of the countryside on the edges of our extended cities. Not truly rural, but far from our suburban cliches, the site will provoke questions on its metamorphosis, and on the role of the landscape architect as the interlocutor in our time of urban agriculture, urban development, and sustainable development.

Learning Outcomes
| Gain knowledge and understanding of large scale contemporary landscape issues, such as sub-urban expansion themes, agrarian transformation in rural and sub rural areas as well a project-orientated understanding of the agricultural and natural dynamic in the French 'Cantons' (districts).

This is an umbrella course to cover the 50 SCQF credits undertaken by European Masters in Landscape Architecture (EMiLA), who choose ENSP for their first placement. Please note that students will be taught and assessed in French. |
