Course description | THIS IS A FOR-CREDIT ONLY COURSE OFFERED BY THE OFFICE OF LIFELONG LEARNING (OLL); ONLY STUDENTS REGISTERED WITH OLL SHOULD BE ENROLLED
This course will enable students to examine the anatomical structure of the animal and will include the structure and motion of animal skeletons and general muscle patterns. This research and groundwork will inform the development of a range of studies and artwork. Students will explore the expressive qualities of the drawing materials and develop a more considered approach to rendering their personal interpretation in the resolved work. Students will refer to the series of photographs of ¿Animal Locomotion¿ by Eadward Muybridge, and also the work of the American film maker Michael Langan whose films explore the boundaries of live action and animation. As part of the course students will be asked to make works in response to the subject of Edinburgh Zoo ¿ viewed as a public space for the spectators, and a private space for the inhabitant animal. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. RESEARCH
demonstrate a rigorous work ethic in the sketchbook that informs an analytical interpretation of animal anatomy and also underpins the expressive and thought provoking qualities
2. PRACTICE
be effective in the uses of a range drawing, painting and mixed media techniques both within a sketchbook and in development studies in response to the study of animals.
3. PRESENT
present a range of directed lines of enquiry and insightful reflection in the selection and editing of visual ideas which reveal a position on the study of animals.

Assessment Information
This course will be assessed by the submission of a portfolio of visual design works within the discipline studied. This will include a selection of resolved design works, preparatory studies, visual research and evidence of a contextual awareness through a completed sketchbook and/or visual journal. The work must be presented in a clear and professional manner appropriate to the discipline. The submission should include work undertaken within the class as well as directed and independent study out with the class.
The combined submission will be assessed against the three learning outcomes for this course. These are equally weighted and each will be given a percentage grade. To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 30% in each learning outcome and an overall combined mark of 40% minimum. |
