| Course description | Set firmly within the role of the Mental Health Officer, this course will explore the facts, statistics and underpinning policy in relation to the promotion of well being and will analyse the social construction of mental disorder and related myths, stigma and stereotyping. Social models of mental well being and the recovery approach will be explored. The causation, manifestation and symptoms of mental disorder as defined in the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 will be explored, for example mental disorder, personality disorder and learning disability as well as issues of dual diagnosis. Key diagnostic categories will be analysed across acute, functional and organic conditions. The issues in relation to early psychosis in children and young people will be addressed as will the challenge of responding to suicidal behaviour. |
