Course description | The course will review research into the brain changes that accompany normal ageing, with a focus on episodic memory; discuss this evidence and its implications for theories of cognitive ageing; foster critical thinking, independent reading, and the ability to evaluate scientific evidence that relates the brain to behaviour. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students should be able:
- To understand the principal brain changes that occur in ageing, and how they may be linked to the typical pattern of memory decline
- To discuss how the neural correlates of episodic memory encoding and retrieval change in older compared to younger adults
- To demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical issues raised by neuroimaging studies of cognitive function in ageing

Assessment Information
Coursework essay (90%): students will write a 3000 word essay in the style and format of a review in Current Directions in Psychological Science. This will present a selective review of an important issue raised in the course.
Class presentation (10%): this will be based on core course readings.
Visiting student variant assessment: 3000 word essay to be set by the Course Organiser and due Friday 4pm, week 13, semester 1. |
