Course description | This course will consider how Shakespeare's plays have been adapted and appropriated by a range of modern and postmodern writers and filmmakers. The cultural prestige enjoyed by Shakespeare's works has long inspired other artists to appropriate and re-interpret their narrative and thematic concerns. This course will examine some of the principal ways in which this has occurred. It will analyse the motives involved in reshaping and rewriting Shakespeare's works in a variety of contexts. The course will consider the ways in which texts "talk back" to Shakespeare's plays by addressing perceived gaps or silences, by adopting the viewpoint of marginal characters, or by extending their implications in alternative temporal or cultural circumstances. Particular attention will be paid to theoretical understanding of adaptation and appropriation as well as to critical and creative approaches deriving from Marxism, postcolonialism, feminism and queer theory. The course will concentrate on the legacy of four plays: Richard III, Hamlet, King Lear, and The Tempest. |

By the end of the course students will be able to
- critically assess the range of ways in which Shakespeare=s plays have been appropriated in the twentieth and twenty-first century
- understand and use appropriately the critical vocabulary for analysing practices of adaptation and appropriation
- show an awareness of relevant intellectual and historical contexts
