| Course description | The course will take in the full chronological range of medieval romance, charting its development from the origins of courtly romance in twelfth-century France, through the later Middle Ages, and concluding in the Renaissance with the romances of Sidney and Shakespeare. In the light of this historical / chronological approach, we shall question why romance emerged when it did, the nature of its relationship to contemporary social, political, and religious ideas, and the reasons not only for its resilience and enduring popularity, but also for its ultimate decline.
But as well as exploring the historical specificity of the genre, the lengthy timescale that we are considering will enable us to assess the extent to which the underlying structures and meanings of romance remain relatively stable, despite historic change. For however much they may differ from each other in points of detail, romance narratives regardless of when and where they were produced share both a basic subject matter (love and adventure), and narrative structure (the quest). And the persistence with which romance revisits and rehearses this romantic material raises the question to which will be returning throughout the course - of whether the genre can be said to enjoy a certain degree of autonomy from history, in other words, whether it has an independent life of its own.
