Course description | This course engages with a range of Australian and Canadian writing focused upon the experiences of British settler communities. It focuses primarily upon twentieth- and twenty-first-century "reimaginings" of the colonial settler experience, but also features creative writing by nineteenth- and early twentieth-century "first-generation" settlers from England, Ireland and Scotland. The course is divided into two sections, the first focused upon writing from Canada, and the second on Australian writing. Each section begins with a session on colonial poetry and prose, before moving on to consider a range of later works by well-known authors and poets such as Margaret Atwood, Alistair MacLeod, Alice Munro and Michael Ondaatje (Canada); and Peter Carey, David Malouf, Les Murray, Janette Turner Hospital, Henry Handel Richardson and Patrick White (Australia). |

Pre-requisites | A MINIMUM of three college/university level literature courses at grade B or above (should include no more than one introductory level literature course). Related courses such as civilisation or creative writing are not considered for admissions to this course. Applicants should also note that, as with other popular courses, meeting the minimum does NOT guarantee admission. In making admissions decisions preference will be given to students who achieve above the minimum requirement with the typical visiting student admitted to this course having three to four literature classes at grade A.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
An understanding of the ways in which Australian and Canadian settler writing has evolved from the colonial period to the present
A comparative understanding of the major themes and preoccupations in Australian and Canadian writing about the settler experience
A clear sense of the problematic status of Australian, Canadian and other settler literatures within postcolonial theory, given the conflicted relationship between white settlers and indigenes/other migrant groups
A critical vocabulary with which to analyse the shift from "imported" British literary traditions to a local literary aesthetic

Special Arrangements
Numbers are limited to 15, with priority given to students taking degrees involving English or Scottish Literature and Visiting Students placed by the Admissions Office. Students not in these categories need the written approval of the Head of English Literature before enrolling. In the case of excess applications places will be decided by ballot. |
