| Course description | This course will explore how the revival of sceptical thought affected a range of key literary works from the late sixteenth century until the Restoration. The course will begin by investigating the development of sceptical thinking in the sixteenth century in terms of some of its core preoccupations: problems of perception and trust, religious divisions and differences, the nature and existence of God, and sexual difference. It will then continue to explore the growth of critical empiricism and the evolution of scientific methods of enquiry during the seventeenth century and Restoration. Particular attention will be given to changing understandings of the body and of the body politic during this period. A range of different literary forms will considered, including the essay, lyric poetry, satire, political prose, and dramatic comedies and tragedies. |

| Pre-requisites | A MINIMUM of 4 college/university level literature courses at grade B or above (should include no more than one introductory level literature course). Related courses such as civilisation or other interdisciplinary classes, Freshman Year Seminars or composition/creative writing classes/workshops are not considered for admission to this course. Applicants should also note that, as with other popular courses, meeting the minimum does NOT guarantee admission. In making admissions decisions preference will be given to students who achieve above the minimum requirement with the typical visiting student admitted to this course having 4 literature classes at grade A.
