| Course description | The course examines a number of key issues relating to the Literature, Film and Politics of France since 1940. Based upon an integrated approach, the course examines the interaction among the three principal areas studied. Particular attention is paid to a number of common themes which recur in the literature, cinema and political discourse of the period. These common themes include the following: World War II, collaboration and the Holocaust; ideology; colonialism and francophonie; childhood, adolescence and education; political and personal identity; history, memory and knowledge; gender, race, religion and society; mechanisms of repression, persuasion, and subversion. The course also analyses political and institutional change, the evolution of certain key philosophical and intellectual movements (Existentialism, Feminism), formal developments in French and Francophone literature and film. Students who are qualified for admission to French 1B are not admissable to French 1A. Transfers by such students from French 1B to 1A are not permitted. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Course Aims:
- To provide a language course which enables students to produce accurate spoken and written French, and which consolidates and extends knowledge of French grammar and idiom
- To introduce students to a range of styles, genres and registers in French
- To provide opportunities for independent study and to promote the effective use of reference resources and authentic language materials
-to encourage consistency in application and quality of work through use of the exemption system
By the end of the course students should be able to:
- participate and interact effectively in tutorials in French
- demonstrate the ability to produce accurate written and spoken French
- identify different styles and registers in French
- identify and understand complex grammatical structures and their uses in French
- demonstrate use of self-study material (dictionaries, grammar books, websites) |
