Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Be able to critically evaluate a range of technologies in terms of their impact on training and development.
2. Be able to begin to design your own e-learning resources.
3. Be able to contextualise your own training practice in terms of the key issues emerging from current research in e-learning. |
Assessment Information
You will create and maintain an online learning journal in which to explore how to apply the technologies introduced during the course in your own professional context. At the end of the course you will be required to submit an e-portfolio drawn partly from this journal focusing on a theme of particular interest. This presentation should be equivalent in length to an essay of 4.000 words, although because of the different structure of e-portfolios it need not follow a traditional essay format. However, the usual academic requirements of referencing and critical thinking will apply. |
Special Arrangements
This course will be conducted largely online, and can be taken wholly online if wished, although on-campus students will have the option of attending some face-to-face lab sessions (which others will be able to attend virtually). |

Structured Environments & Information Systems
You will be introduced to the various course learning environments, the course team and your fellow students. Discussion will focus on the broader organisational and business training and development contexts within which e-learning is embedded, with a wider discussion of information systems in general.
Communications
In this section we will explore various communications tools - from chat to videoconferencing to Second Life - and relate them to the purpose and practice of communication within organisations more generally, while assessing their potential as training environments.
Web 2.0 and Social Networking
You will explore and critique a range of 'Web 2.0' digital environments and social networks and their potential for training and development. Some sessions will take place in on-campus computer labs, while others will take place out of class, using your own computer for access, so that you can understand the challenges involved for distance learners.
