Course description | To explore the varied theoretical and conceptual meanings of Leadership. To critically assess these meanings in a variety of individual environmental, sector and organisational contexts. To understand and study the links between the ideas and practices involved in leadership with the ideas and professional practice involved in HRM. In particular, to analyse how management development practices effect leadership. To debate and critically evaluate the components and nature of leadership effectiveness. To introduce students to a range of techniques, practices and skills used to understand the contingent nature of leadership.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Describe and discuss the major theoretical and conceptual approaches concerning leadership in organisations.
2. Understand how these approaches may vary according to a range of contingent factors.
3. Relate the key debates about leadership to the broader debates involved in contemporary Human Resource Management.
4. Relate to all of these areas to the specific field of Management Development.

1. Identify and source key texts and written sources.
2. Summarise theoretical debates.
3. Synthesise the results of empirical research.

1. To locate a critical analysis of leadership within the functions of HRM practice.
2. To assess the consequences within organisations of different types of leadership and associated contingencies.

On completion of the course the student should be able to:-
1. Demonstrate their awareness and understanding of complex debates.
2. Present a consistent and well structure account of these debates via an assessment.
