Course description | The course covers two types of separation processes: (a) humidification and drying and (b) distillation. Part (a) covers humidity definitions, cooling tower design methods, dehumidification by direct air - water contacting and surface condensers. In addition to Drying and humidification, various separation processes will be introduced: Bio-separation and Bio-Fouling, Reactive distillation, Membranes, Dialysis and Adsorption. In part (b), a discussion of composition and temperature profiles in ideal distillation columns is followed by examples and purposes of non-standard configurations and energy integration schemes for distillation. The modelling basis for tray-by-tray simulation of distillation columns is followed by a review of how azeotrope - forming mixtures can be separated. Topics include the causes of non-ideality, extractive and azeotropic distillation and composition trajectories. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students should be able to use humidity charts, design cooling towers and dryers, understand the fundamentals of bio-sepration, reactive distillation, membranes, dialysis and adsorption.Describe tray by tray distillation methods and heat integration for distillation, recognise design faults from column profiles, draw flowsheets for azeotropic and extractive distillation, find distillation regions and boundaries for ternary systems and calculate the consequent limits on separations. |
Assessment Information
Two hour written examination at the end of the semester.
