Course description | This course provides BEng and MEng Chemical Engineering students with an introduction to the bioprocess industry and its rapid recent expansion. Necessary background in biochemistry and biology is given, including descriptions of single-celled organisms, DNA transcription and manipulation. Bioreactor design is discussed, including cellular stoichiometry and energetics, kinetics of cellular growth and death, bioreactor design and enzyme catalysis. Examples of processes include fermentations, separation methods, protein purification and monoclonal antibody production. The course includes a works visit in which some of the equipment used in the bioprocessing industries will be exhibited. |
