| Course description | An integrated introduction to spoken and written Japanese for those with little or no previous knowledge of the language. The course will include kana writing (the Japanese phonetic writing), and an introduction to some kanji (Japanese Characters), approximately 150 to 250. A good deal of private study is necessary to meet the requirements of the course.
The course provides essential grounding for the second year Japanese language course (Japanese 2A, ASST08006) and subsequent study to Japanese Honours Degree level.
This course is also recommended as a continuation of Introductory Japanese 2 (ASST07002).
This course is not available to native or near-native speakers of Japanese. If in doubt, contact the Course Organiser.
All students will be given a formative feedback exercise that will be helpful for the assessment for this course and students' general academic development.

6 hour(s) per week for 22 week(s). Plus additional Kanji workshop (1 hour per week, Friday 12.10-13.00), which is compulsory for the students who are intending to proceed to MA Honours Japanese / MA Honours Japanese & Linguistics. Otherwise, Kanji workshop is optional.
The essential textbook and workbook will be needed from the second class (Tuesday in the first week), so it is strongly advised to buy them well in advance at JP-Books (http://shop.jpbooks.co.uk/) if this course is compulsary for you (e.g. MA Japanese students). |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
To provide a structured introduction to Japanese grammar
To enable students to read and write hiragana, katakana and about 150-250 kanji characters, and to use Japanese for simple spoken and written communication. |
