| Course description | This is a core course for the MSc Dementia: International Experience, Policy and Practice. It is also available as a standalone CPD course.
Teaching will be entirely online.
The course gives a critical introduction to theoretical perspectives that underpin dementia care and takes a holistic view of dementia aiming to develop a critical understanding that includes, but goes beyond, a medical approach.
The course aims to develop detailed awareness of theoretical approaches to dementia and a critical understanding of how local and national policy in different countries impacts on people with dementia and their carers. It will also look at the effectiveness of interventions at different stages of dementia. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. A critical understanding of different types of dementia and the potential impact of each on the experiences of different groups of service users and their carers.
2. Appreciation of different theoretical approaches to dementia care and the changing relevance of each as dementia progresses.
3. Knowledge of medical and social interventions in dementia care and evaluation of their effectiveness at different stages of the condition.
4. An appreciation of the research and practice evidence of dementia at individual, organisational and policy levels.
A critical understanding of the role that students can play in supporting people with dementia and their carers.
5. A critical understanding of policy and practice internationally and key considerations in policy transfer |
