| Course description | The course will examine a range of techniques of versification and forms of eloquence in the poetic canon. It will provide an overview of the historical development of these forms and techniques, while focusing on ways of reading specific texts. Techniques studied include metre, rhythm and scansion, and such elements of poetic language as diction and metaphor. |

| Pre-requisites | A MINIMUM of 4 college/university level literature courses at grade B or above (should include no more than one introductory level literature course). Related courses such as civilisation or other interdisciplinary classes, Freshman Year Seminars or composition/creative writing classes/workshops are not considered for admissions to this course. Applicants should also note that, as with other popular courses, meeting the minimum does NOT guarantee admission. In making admissions decisions preference will be given to students who achieve above the minimum requirement with the typical visiting student admitted to this course having three to four literature classes at grade A.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
This is the third of the four 'Critical Practice' courses which aim to provide students with a set of practical skills and range of knowledge that will complement and supplement other course work undertaken in the honours years. The lectures will add to students' analytical skills by demonstrating the conjunctions of theory and practice in named poems. Students taking the course will become familiar with a range of poetic techniques and literary forms as they have evolved and in their historical context where appropriate. They will come to recognise different critical approaches to the poetic artefact, and ways of reading informed by gender, by genre, and by the strategies and tactics of English prosody.
