Course descriptionThis Core Course seeks to enhance understanding of cultural, institutional and linguistic change in Europe by bringing together ideas, issues and scholarly approaches which elsewhere are frequently considered in compartmentalised fashion, as part of different academic disciplines. Unlike Cultural Studies, where textual perspectives predominate, the focus here will be on the importance of institutions, in the widest sense of that term, allowing for a genuinely interdisciplinary, but nonetheless cohesive, treatment of the central theme. The Core Course provides additional overall cohesiveness by introducing numerous themes which are taken up and explored more fully in the Options made available for selection.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Although the programme is not underpinned by any aspiration to the impossible goal of exhaustivity, it is anticipated that the combination of wide-ranging instances and approaches, brought together through a focus on the importance of institutions, will help to develop the intellectual autonomy necessary for advanced research, pursuing otherwise unenvisaged lines of enquiry. From a vocational perspective, the programme will also facilitate a process of cultural familiarisation with different European "ways of doing things", providing students with informed insights into the motivations and influences underlying the comportment and mindset of European interlocutors in a professional context.
