| Course description | While fostering an appreciation of social and cultural diversity both within Britain and across the world, this half-course aims to help students develop a sound basic knowledge and a critical understanding of the academic discipline of Social Anthropology. Introducing a variety of key anthropological concepts and concerns, it demonstrates the importance of anthropological theories and insights to other academic disciplines and to everyday problems arising in divergent cultural contexts. |

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
| Students will gain a broad appreciation of both the difficulties and possibilities inherent in the comparative study of different societies and cultures. They will be able to draw out contrasts and similarities between their own and other societies - recognising the particularities of these societies and engaging reflectively with the values of their own cultural and social context. They will be aware of key anthropological concepts and concerns, and in a position to appreciate the significance of these concerns in a way that contributes to a critical and informed understanding of the contemporary world. Last, but not least, they will be well prepared for further study in Social Anthropology and other related disciplines. |
Assessment Information
| Students will be required to complete one assessed essay of around 1500-2000 words (40% of the overall mark) and a degree examination consisting of one 2-hour paper (60% of the overall mark). You MUST pass the exam to pass the course. |
Special Arrangements
| A quota of 380 students, with preference given in the following order: (1) First year students admitted to a degree including Social Anthropology (including BA Humanities & Soc Sci) and Visiting Students holding a written offer of a place; (2) First year students whose main subject is in SSPS, or whose main subject has a joint degree with Social Anthropology (including Religion and Combined Studies); (3) Students taking second-year SSPS half-courses; (4) First Year students taking BA Humanities & Social Science; (5) other first year students in CHSS. |
