| Course description | This course will provide students with the key characteristics of common research design. The approaches covered in this course will include:
* Introduction to developments in experimental approaches
* Introduction to evaluation and audit
* Introduction to survey design
* Introduction to participatory Research
* Introduction to grounded theory
* Introduction to ethnography
* Introduction to phenomenology
* Introduction to epistemology
There will also be provision in the course to address the concepts of viability, and reliability, linking in with the theories that underpin the paradigms of research.
Main Sampling methods will include: random, stratified, opportunistic, convenience, purposive and theoretical.
Data collection methods will include: questionnaires, interviews, observation, document analysis, clinical measurement.
Further consideration will be given to the ethical dimensions, research governance and user involvement in gathering evidence and ways of evaluating its rigour. Key design issues such as rigour in both qualitative and quantitative approaches will be considered as well as sources of bias. |

To demonstrate understanding and application of the main research designs and approaches used to gather evidence in health and social care.
To identify and understand the role of different sampling and data collection methods that contribute to the generation of evidence based practice.
To demonstrate an understanding of the role of ethics, research governance and user involvement in gathering evidence and ways of evaluating its rigour and application.

| An oral and visual presentation (20%) and a course paper consisting of a report of the research exercise confined to within 3,000-3,500 words (80%). |
